Jimmy's Top 3 Premium Features for the Wolf Pack

Hello Everyone!

Premium week seemed like the perfect time for me to jump in and get involved!  I work for a cyber-security company called Arctic Wolf Networks.  We are heavily entrenched in the Atlassian ecosystem having Jira Software, Jira Service Management & Confluence Cloud Premium for pretty much our entire user base (over 1000 users).

Arctic Wolf was on Cloud premium before I joined the pack, and the main driving force behind choosing premium was the 24/7 premium support and the 99.9% uptime SLA.

I joined the Pack as the "Atlassian Guy" to support all of our R&D teams.  I have spent most of that time introducing our company to many of the premium features they already pay for but have not been taking advantage of.  I wanted to take a couple of minutes to talk about the top three "Wait, we can do that?" moments I have had introducing premium features to various teams at our company.

Advanced Roadmaps improve visibility for our Product team:

My favorite moment is also one of the more recent ones.  We have recently revamped our release process (I'm not going to go into the specifics here, stay tuned for a future article!).  Our management team decided we needed to stop using a bunch of different tools with no consistent process for tracking the status of projects.  Everyone was told that Jira was going to be the single source of truth.  I was asked to help build a new Jira project for our Product team to track the features our development teams were working on.  I suggested using Advanced Roadmaps to bring everything together and we started building the hierarchy that they wanted to be able to see.  Long story short, our Product team is very happy that they now have the visibility they didn't have before, and they are able to build reports from the Advanced Roadmaps views to share with our upper management to show how we are tracking against larger company initiatives.

JSM Insight asset management > Tables of data in Confluence:

I'm a part of the R&D lab management team.  This was a brand-new team that was formed at the beginning of this calendar year.  We started by simply inheriting things that people didn't want to be responsible for, or didn't have time to manage properly.  My specific mandate was to manage all things Atlassian from an R&D perspective while other members of the team were responsible for physical hardware in the office or cloud infrastructure subscriptions.  One of the first tasks they wanted to tackle was making an inventory of everything we had.  This started as a table of data in a Confluence page.  When I mentioned that Insight for JSM was an option, I got a bunch of confused looks.  As we were diving in and I showed them what was possible, those confused looks turned to light bulbs above people's heads.  We now have a reasonably good start on the inventory in Insight and as a bonus we are able to use JSM to link assets to changes that are being made (such as OS and software upgrades).  This works really well for being able to have an audit trail of what was done and when it was completed. So that if someone complains that something isn't working, we now have a history of what was changed recently which can help in determining the root cause faster.

Confluence Analytics highlight important documentation:

Ok, I can't take credit for this one.  The manager of our documentation team came to me and asked what information we could get out of the analytics to help her team determine how they should prioritize their work.  What we have been able to uncover is the pages that see a lot of traffic and the pages that don't.  This helps our docs team determine what topics are important for our support teams to have as reference material.  They have also been working closely with the support managers to try and improve visibility and search-ability of the documentation to make it as easy as possible for people to get what they need quickly.

I know there are quite a few features I haven't touched on and there are some we haven’t even started using yet.  But I hope to be back here again soon to tell you about how much we love some of the other premium features (when we start using them).

Until next time, stay safe and healthy!

I'm looking forward to using Insights and Confluence Analytics more in 2022!  I already use Advanced Roadmaps weekly :)
