Plan like a pro for Atlassian Team '24

In 2023, I ventured into my first Atlassian Team experience, believing I was ready for whatever awaited me. Turns out, I was in for quite a ride.

Whether you're a rookie or a seasoned attendee, here are 10 nuggets of wisdom I wish I'd known before diving headfirst into Atlassian Team.

 (1) Craft your agenda, but stay nimble

With a cornucopia of over 100 activities spanning four days, prioritise wisely:

  • Attend the keynotes for major announcements.
  • Tailor your session selection to match your interests.
  • Stay flexible! You never know what might spark your curiosity.

Check out the Events Agenda, and Full Session List, to start planning now.

(2) Prepare for the essentials

While the allure of Vegas can be overwhelming, don't neglect the basics:

  • Locate nearby 24-hour convenience stores; there’s a Walgreens right outside the Venetian, and a CVS at Treasure Island.
  • Familiarise yourself with fast-food options for quick bites. There’s lots of options in the hotels and on the main strip.
  • Scope out neon-themed stores for this year's Neon Nights Bash attire!

(3) Engage with the ecosystem

Fear not the booths! Each will offer a trove of learnings, from Marketplace Vendors, Solution Partners, and Atlassian Specialists.

Leave no booth unvisited; you never know what gems await.

(4) Look after yourself

In the desert oasis of Las Vegas, wellness is paramount:

  • Stay hydrated; drink lots of water.
  • Pack essentials for marathon days, including chargers and gadgets.
  • Be safe! Travel smartly, especially at night, and consider group outings.

(5) Explore beyond the conference

Amid the official buzz, don’t forget there’s lots more going on.

Check out…

(6) Prepare for an international visit

For globetrotters, foresight is the key to a seamless journey. Don’t be like me, and run up a $100 roaming charge in the first 10 minutes!

  • Secure a local SIM or eSIM for budget-friendly connectivity. Whilst most casinos have wifi, I found this a simple way to stay connected, especially out on the strip.
  • Opt for an international payment card to minimise fees.
  • Purchase essentials - plugs, charges, cosmetics - before leaving home. Much cheaper than buying at the airport.

(7) Network, network, network

Forge connections with fellow enthusiasts and industry stalwarts:

  • Strike up conversations at booths, in sessions, or during breaks.
  • Not sure where to start? Visit the Community and University booth, where Leaders are always happy to chat!

Remember everyone who goes to Team 24 is an enthusiast just like you!

(8) Plan for (local) travel

There’ll be some movement between hotels this year, with non-Atlassian sessions and events in multiple locations, and Bash at Wynn Casino.

Plan ahead when travelling…

  • Utilise map apps like Google Maps for seamless navigation.
  • Explore public transport options via apps like CityMapper.
  • Opt for ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft for hassle-free commuting.

(9) Make room for swag

For swag aficionados (like myself), there’s lots on offer, including some big prizes to be won.

Make space in your luggage to bring memorabilia home, and bring a bag onto the expo floor for on-the-fly swag collection.

(10) Embrace the experience

While the conference steals the spotlight, don't forget to enjoy the city:

  • Explore beyond the venue - Sphere anyone?
  • Strike a balance between work and play—it's Vegas, after all!
  • Don’t miss out on Bash - a highlight of Atlassian Team - this year’s theme is Neon Nights, hosted by Afrojack

My essentials always include moisturizing nasal spray and lip balm. You might even pack a hand creme to avoid dry skin. Vegas is in the desert, after all. If you've never been there, don't underestimate the low humidity!

Great tips, especially #3: do go and have a chat at every booth. It can lead to amazing experiences, and if it's not for you just say so and walk away.

@Peter Van de Voorde - I've never tried chatting at every booth before; I'll carve out time to do just that! 🙌

When I am in Vegas I want to be everywhere,.. so it usually means a lot of walking (like a 30k steps in a day). So good nad breathable walking shoes is a must!

And of course I agree with @Andreas Springer _Actonic_ - Vegas is a desert and not only humidity but temperatures here are huge with high UV level, so do not forget about sunburn prevention.. sunblock of SPF 30+ usually is something that everyone should have when planning the be exposed to sun for couple of hours in a day.
