How to make charts / display aggregations?

Shawn Giese April 25, 2024

Hi, we are enjoying our first steps in Product Discovery but want to push somethings up a level... for example:

  • Calculate the sum of the value of each goal that is currently being delivered
  • Calculate the sum of expected time / story points of each goal being delivered
  • Get ideas approved... for example have PM approve / lock the value score of an idea
  • Assign people to comment on / review an idea and see if they have clicked reviewed : ) (like assigning a task but not a Jira work task).
  • Be able to assign an idea to someone other than a creator on the board... for comments and insights

@Shawn Giese

  • Calculate the sum of the value of each goal that is currently being delivered

Click on the grey bar at the top of the value column and choose sum (I've used Impact instead):

  • Calculate the sum of expected time / story points of each goal being delivered

I think you would have to do that through Jira Software (see Rollup story points to Epic level ) and set the delivery progress field to show story points not issue count:

  • Get ideas approved... for example have PM approve / lock the value score of an idea

I don't think this is currently possible, but someone else may know better

  • Assign people to comment on / review an idea and see if they have clicked reviewed : ) (like assigning a task but not a Jira work task).

Hey, thanks Stephen. I did not realize that we could have some aggregations already on the table value. I was trying to build a Dashboard but this is a great step forward already!

Does not look like we can use that technique to aggregate the story points or number of issues though. That would have been nice so we could see effort vs value : ) Effort as in the effor of the linked Jira tasks, not just the estimated effort of the idea object.

If I understand correctly what you need, I guess you can achieve it by modifying the workflow on Jira Product Discovery project. Below is the video explaining how to set up "approval" workflow, you just need to replicate it for your case and create a group from product manager or allow a specific PM to approve it.

You can only assign ideas to users with role "user (creator)", however, user with role "contributor" can also comment, create insights and vote.

Hi @Shawn Giese

For assigning an idea to non-creators, you could create a new user field and have that contain the person you want to 'assign' the idea to, then create a filter that filters by that field you created being the current user. You can then share that filter, or a board using that filter, with the people you want to assign stuff to. It is not a true Assignee, but it might work? Or you could simply have that field available as a filter in your view in JPD directly. You can then also 'assign' more than one person.

To allow users to click something to indicate if they have reviewed, you could add a 'reactions' field you name appropriately and then ask them to put a thumbs up or smiley or whatever you prefer to indicate that they have reviewed. You can then see who has done this.

Also, Delivery Status rolls up all the Story points of the Delivery Tickets in your Idea if you set Delivery Progress to Story points, like @Stephen_Lugton suggested. So you could show that field to show the total of the story points.

Hovering over Delivery progress bar, shows you the total as well, the Delivery status shows the story points in each status category (To Do, In Progress, Done)

Hi @Shawn Giese ! thank you for embarking on the JPD journey

  • Calculate the sum of the value of each goal that is currently being delivered
    • we have formulas fields in JPD which allow to run computations from existing field and store the result of said computations on a different field, that is then sortable, filterable, etc. Try it out!
  • Calculate the sum of expected time / story points of each goal being delivered
    • same as above if the data about time, story points is stored within JPD fields
  • Get ideas approved... for example have PM approve / lock the value score of an idea
    • what's your use case here? do you want to prevent editing of the value of a field of an idea? that's not possible today.
  • Assign people to comment on / review an idea and see if they have clicked reviewed : ) (like assigning a task but not a Jira work task).
    • you could use automation to send an email to a given person for all ideas with fields of a given value. Try it out!
  • Be able to assign an idea to someone other than a creator on the board... for comments and insights
    • Ideas can be assigned to creators today! you can mention anyone in your project in comments though using the @ symbol.

Hope this helps!

Amina, JPD PM
