Where to allow creation of a Feature

RICHARD S BRAICO March 19, 2024

Can anyone tell me the differences (pros and cons) in creating a feature in Jira align vs. Jira when using the two in conjunction?

I have always created Feature solely in JA however, I have come across an Enterprise that currently only allows the creation of the Feature in Jira. The connector then replicates it in JA.

Thanks

@RICHARD S BRAICO If you have bi-directional sync on, you could create the feature in Jira or Jira Align.  However, if you create it in Jira, you will probably still need to go into Jira Align and update additional fields such as the parent and planning/quarterly increment.

Good point! Thanks Jenn

This is an interesting question Richard.

Some random thoughts that might spark a debate:

In the run up to PI Planning Features should be created by Product Owners from Epics (Initiatives) which are not managed in Jira software.

Creating Features in Jira Align from the Epic is a lot easier as the tool auto populates several  fields.

Creating Features in Jira Software implies a bottom up approach which is less than ideal - the strategy drives the work not the other way around.

Creating/managing Features in Jira will result in you missing lots of additional Jira Align 'Feature functionality' as many of the tabs are not available.

It feels like the practice you describe is impeding many of the benefits that Jira Align provides.

That said, these are just my thoughts and others may well see benefits from the Jira software approach that I have missed.
