January 11, 2024

Hello everyone!

My name is Aga Walczak-Karbowska and I’m a Senior Product Manager responsible for compliance in our Data Center products.

This includes accessibility where our teams continue our journey towards accessibility in alignment with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. We are committed to ensuring compliance and enabling your end-users with disabilities to work efficiently. Since the previous VPAT update, we have worked with the Atlassian Accessibility Team on removing accessibility blockers from the most popular scenarios in all of the Data Center products. You can find the VPAT documents we updated and refreshed in 2023 at atlassian.com/accessibility.

These reports are available for the products affected by our remediation effort:

  • Bamboo Data Center

  • Bitbucket Data Center

  • Confluence Data Center

  • Crowd Data Center

  • Jira Software Data Center

  • Jira Service Management Data Center and Assets.

Progress in accessibility

The recent VPATs research confirmed the improvement in the experience of low-vision, keyboard-only, and assistive technology users (including screen readers). We closed known critical issues with very limited newly discovered ones. You can see the problems resolved in our products using this filter view. We continue to focus on resolving critical issues as a part of our public roadmap for Bitbucket, Confluence, Jira, and Jira Service Management.

The exemplary improvements in Jira scenarios included:

  • navigable Basic Search functionality, custom checkbox elements with proper roles, and clearer form fields

  • accessible drag & drop functionality and improved screen reader ticket links in Kanban board

  • keyboard-accessible Backlog Page buttons and user avatars showing tooltips on focus

  • Dashboards with proper aria-labels for Add Viewers and Add Editors, color-only links explained for screen readers

  • Issue View improvements of accessible “more options” button, menu items, attachments, and perceivable tooltips for icons

We are increasing transparency of our accessibility backlog in our public issues tracker, JAC. It now offers a full view of issues revealed during the recent VPATs research and audit. It also creates our WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance scope and helps track progress. We will focus our remediation effort on Confluence, Jira, and Jira Service Management to remove high and medium-severity issues in the most popular scenarios and increase the ratio of supported WCAG criteria. We also aim to provide another VPATs update this year, ideally aligning it with the LTS versions of our software.

Users with disabilities are our sounding board

Atlassian’s accessibility team is interested in speaking with customers who use accessibility settings or assistive technology with Atlassian products. If you want to share your experience, we invite you to submit this form.

I am not colorblind, but do you have any colorblind people as a part of the tester / evaluation community?
