45 days til Server end of support: Your top questions answered (Q&A from our latest webinar)

45 days EOS Blog (1).png

Hi Atlassian Community!

The clock is ticking, and Server end of support is now less than 45 days away. If you still have Server licenses and want to understand what steps you should take next, you're in the right place. We recently hosted a webinar + live Q&A - Farewell to server: Learn how to build your migration plan.

In this session, we cover everything you need to know about Server end of support, including your options for moving to a supported platform (migrate to Cloud or upgrade to Data Center?), how to choose the right path for your business, the most important actions you need to take, getting started, and more.

We also received a lot of great questions but we weren't able to get to all of them during the Q&A. So, we'll cover the most popular ones in this post.

If you missed the webinar, don't worry! You can watch the recording here.

Migration Guidance, Support, Pricing & Promotions

Take the first step with the Atlassian Migration Program, where we've we've distilled the most critical resources and learnings into a single one-stop-shop. Get the tools, support, guidance, and promotions you need to migrate with confidence.

Migration Guidance

  1. How can I best prepare for a migration from Data Center to Cloud? The best way to prepare for a migration from Data Center to Cloud is to check out the Atlassian Migration Program, which contains several resources to help you prepare for a migration. The Cloud migration guide is a great place to start, as it walks you through the phases of a migration and what to expect, as most of the content applies to both Server and Data Center migrations. You can also fast-track your migration by connecting with a Cloud Specialized Solution Partner who can not only help prepare you for your migration but can also do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
  2. Do you have a runbook recommendation guide? Yes, you can download the Cloud migration toolkit to help you plan and complete your migration to Atlassian Cloud. Make a copy of our runbook template and use it to record the specific set of actions required to start and complete the migration. Document the preparation steps taken, the duration of each, and any notes or reminders for completing the action. Record any necessary downtime. Add new items to the runbook as they occur and keep the list updated until the very end of the migration process.

  3. We have shifted a large portion of our in-house web applications to 3rd party solutions. Currently, our primary use of Atlassian is mostly just Confluence. Is there a way to just migrate Confluence to the Cloud? I guess something below the simple level? Yes! You can migrate just your Confluence instance to Cloud. Our Confluence support documentation includes instructions on how to migrate your Confluence data. The best way to do so would be to use our free app, the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant, which is available from our Marketplace or depending on your version may already be installed on your instance. If you are migrating a lot of users and data, we recommend reaching out to a Cloud Specialized Solution Partner who can assist in your migration, even if you are just migrating Confluence.

  4. How do I determine the current version of my company's Jira/Confluence versions? In the Administration Page under Applications, there's a Versions & licenses tab that will tell you what version of Jira or Confluence you're currently using on-premise.
  5. Is there a minimum release level in Jira Server that is necessary for migrating Server data? Is there a list for both Jira and add-ons? To assist you in migrating your Server data to a new or existing Cloud site, you can utilize our free Cloud Migration Assistants (CMAs) developed and maintained by Atlassian. To use the CMAs you'll need to have your Server or Data Center instance updated to the minimum supported version. Please see the below table for the most up-to-date information.Server releases.png

  6. I have not been able to find detailed information about configuring my instance (both Jira Software & Confluence) where can I find detailed information about configuring Cloud? I want the experience for my users to be as similar as possible to our Server configuration. Below are some resources to help you get started in configuring your Jira Software Cloud and Confluence Cloud products. Please keep in mind that our cloud products come with built-in features and functionality that aren't native to Server products and may have required apps to achieve in Server setups. Because of this, configuring cloud products will look a little different and may not map 1:1 with your Server configurations.

  7. Where can we find the number of custom fields for an existing setup? To learn more about your custom fields in your Jira instance, navigate to:

    • Settings > Issues

    • Under Fields, select Custom fields

Check out our support documentation on optimizing your custom fields.

  8. Do I need to have my Server online connected to the internet to migrate? Our Server is currently kept offline. Yes, your Server instance needs to be online in order to migrate. Additionally, if you or your organization use restrictive firewall or proxy server settings, you or your network administrator may need to allow-list certain domains and IP address ranges to ensure Atlassian Cloud products and other services work as expected. Read more about IP addresses and domains.

  9. We have a Community license. Is it possible to create a Test Environment in the Cloud first and then Production? Community licenses aren’t eligible for Cloud Migration Trials, however, you can start a Free Trial of our Cloud products to explore, assess, and migrate to Cloud. We recommend reaching out to your advocate who can help you with any other questions you may have.

  10. Where is Bamboo in cloud? If we don't have it, what is the replacement? For Bamboo customers, there are two paths to remain on a supported platform after Feb 15, 2024:

    • Bamboo Data Center is a self-managed CI/CD option. If there are regulatory hurdles to using Cloud services in your organization, this is the route to choose. You can connect Bamboo Data Center to Bitbucket Cloud.

    • Bitbucket Pipelines is our cloud-hosted CI/CD tool that's integrated into Bitbucket Cloud. With CI/CD built-in, developers have full visibility into the pipeline. This means reduced context switching and more frequent deployments.

You can also do a hybrid model where new pipelines are built in Bitbucket Pipelines and you can keep old pipelines in Bamboo Data Center.

  11. Our GIT repository is stored on an on-premise server. Will Jira Cloud be able to connect back to our repository? Yes via App Tunnels. With this integration, you can see development status within Jira, trigger issue transitions based on Bitbucket events, and more. Learn more about the integration here.

Migration Support

  1. We don't prefer to remain on an unsupported Server instance, but we don't have the budget to migrate to Cloud until (maybe) our FY25 budget in July 2024. We understand how crucial it is to keep your organization safe and secure. We strongly encourage reaching out to our team as soon as possible. They can help you understand all your options, build a business case, make a Cloud migration plan, and more.

  2. We are in the process of moving to cloud and have performed a few migration tests so far. What is the best avenue to get the quickest support for our technical questions? If you're already running test migrations, you've hopefully already opened a MOVE ticket. MOVE tickets are how Atlassian tracks migrations in flight so we can adequately support you during your migration. If you haven't, you can raise a MOVE ticket by going here and selecting migration support. Once you've created your MOVE ticket, you'll be able to create problem tickets connected to that MOVE ticket that will be triaged by our Migration Support Engineers.

  3. Where can we find geolocal resources and expertise to help us with the migration process and/or configuration of Confluence? / Where can I find a list of companies that can assist with migration? If you need a little extra support for your migration you can engage a geolocal Cloud Specialized Solution Partner. To find out more on how Cloud Specialized Partners can help you get to cloud sooner check out the Find a Migration Partner and for a complete list of Solution Partners see our Partner Directory.

  4. For a complex Cloud migration with a Solution Partner, what is the average/expected cost to the organization for consulting and training fees? Need a way to assess the expectation (average cost per hour, etc.) Solution Partners offer a variety of different services from assessments, implementation services, training, support, etc. The cost is dependent on the Statement of Work (SOW). Additionally, some Solution Partners have different accreditations and ethos on the services they provide with some offering white glove service and others taking a more shared ownership approach all of which impact price.

You should also consider the size and complexity of your Server or Data Center instance as larger and more complex self-managed Atlassian footprints will often be more expensive to migrate. We recommend using this page to narrow down and find a partner you might want to work with and reach out to them directly.

  5. Will Atlassian still give us support to migrate to Cloud even after support for Server ends in February? Meaning if I want to migrate in June, will Atlassian still help us and give us support if there are issues found during the migration? Yes, Atlassian will continue to provide Server customers with migration support even after Server support ends on February 15, 2024. Atlassian is ending support on February 15, 2024, meaning we will no longer provide security updates and bug fixes for vulnerabilities. However, if you are in the process of migrating and have made a commitment to Cloud or Data Center, our technical support teams will be available to support you on that journey.

  6. Besides the (helpful) best practices/upgrades information, what additional layers of support are available for migration until the Feb. deadline? In addition to resources and tools, you'll get support from a variety of different Atlassian's such as Advocates, Cloud Migration Managers, Migration Support Engineers, and the Atlassian Community. Additionally, for a little extra support, you can engage a Cloud Specialized Solution Partner to assist with your migration. For more info about how each of these groups can help you, check out these resources:

Pricing & Promotions

  1. Support/maintenance renewal for our on-premise Jira is due shortly. Do we need to renew it to get support to migrate to Cloud? If so, what happens to the contract after migration to the cloud? Is it applied as a refund or a credit to our cloud subscription? Server maintenance renewals are no longer available for purchase. To remain supported, we recommend migrating to Cloud. To help make the transition as smooth as possible, we offer a number of migration incentives:

    • Start a Cloud Migration Trial: This is a great way to explore and assess cloud, understand how cloud differs from self-managed products, try participating Marketplace apps, and plan your migration. With a little more than one month to go until Server support ends, now is the time to activate your trial if you haven't already. Your trial will last for the duration of your Server maintenance, so the sooner you activate it the more value you get.

    • Use step-up credits: Apply any maintenance left on your Server maintenance as a credit towards your cloud subscription.

    • Explore dual licensing: As we approach February 15, our largest migrators may feel especially pressed for time to migrate bigger, more complex instances. But, rest assured, if you purchase an annual cloud subscription between September 12, 2023 - February 15, 2024, Atlassian & participating Marketplace partners will offer up to one year of Server support. This ensures that you won't introduce security risks by remaining on an unsupported Server instance during your migration journey. To be eligible, the annual cloud subscription must be for 1,001 or more users (Jira Software, Jira Work Management, or Confluence) or 251 or more agents (Jira Service Management).

If you're unable to move to Cloud now but need to remain supported, we suggest upgrading to Data Center – our premier self-managed offering.

  2. For the cloud subscription dual licensing, how does the count translate to a Premier/Enterprise cloud license? To be eligible for dual licensing, you must have active Server maintenance or a Data Center subscription that is no more than 30 days past the expiry date AND you purchase an equivalent annual Cloud subscription. The annual Cloud subscription must be for 1,001 or more users (Jira Software, Jira Work Management, or Confluence) or 251 or more agents (Jira Service Management). If you are consolidating multiple Server instances of the same product into a single Cloud site, each instance will qualify for dual licenses as long as the Cloud site has at least 1,001 users/250 agents added from the combined Server licenses. Server customers looking to take advantage of this offer must purchase an annual cloud subscription on or after September 12, 2023, and before February 15, 2024.

  3. Is academic pricing available for Confluence Data Center or Cloud? We offer discounted product licenses to eligible academic institutions. You can find detailed discounted pricing here.

  4. Will having a Community License allow for unlimited agents in Data Center and/or Cloud? To verify Community license eligibility, please submit this form.

Security, Compliance, Privacy, and Reliability

2023 was a significant year for trust. We introduced BYOK encryption, expanded coverage for data residency, increased scale, and much more. In 2024, we will continue to leverage all that we have learned over the last few years to enhance our enterprise-grade platform and ensure that your teams can rest assured knowing that their data is protected in the cloud. Check out our Trust Center to learn more!

  1. Do you offer a Cloud solution for governmental organizations? We do need maximum security and data protection. Atlassian Cloud provides comprehensive data protection to ensure that customer data remains secure, private, and compliant. For customers who require FedRAMP authorization, we are currently working on obtaining the FedRAMP Moderate ATO (Authority to Operate) certification by Q1 2025. To learn more about our existing data protection controls, please visit our whitepaper.

If your organization requires FedRAMP ATO, we encourage you to join our Trust & Security Community group in order to stay updated on our progress and receive notifications when we achieve our "in-progress" designation.

  2. Where is data residency in Jira Cloud? Data residency is available across the majority of our Jira family of products including Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Jira Work Management, and Jira Product Discovery. We offer data residency in six countries and are slated to release six more this year. To learn more about the scope of data residency and the regions that are available, visit our documentation.

  3. Any ETA on when Atlassian will get FedRAMP moderate for more cloud offerings other than Trello? The roadmap said 2023 and is now moved into 2024. FedRAMP Moderate will be available to customers between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025. In our latest update, we shared how we have updated the dates and expanded the scope to include Jira Service Management. Join our Trust & Security Community group to continue receiving updates on our progress and when we obtain our in-progress designation.

  4. Regarding data protection, have there been any data incidents? Security advisories are published regularly on our Trust Center. To search previous disclosures, see our Vulnerability Disclosure Portal.

  5. Do you have an uptime report that can be reviewed? Is there an uptime guarantee? Along with each of our cloud Premium and Enterprise products, we include a Service Level Agreement (SLA). Our SLA guarantees 99.90% uptime for Premium products and 99.95% uptime for Enterprise products. If you encounter issues that don’t meet our guarantee, you can submit a request for compensation in the form of credits to your next bill. Learn more.

  6. Does Atlassian Cloud offer an Okta integration option for authentication?  Yes, you can integrate Okta with Atlassian Cloud to streamline authentication across Atlassian cloud products if you have Atlassian Access. Atlassian Access is a company-wide subscription that provides central governance across multiple Atlassian cloud products. Access is included with our Cloud Enterprise edition at no additional cost or can be purchased as an add-on to our other cloud editions. We have instructions available to guide you through the setup process.

  7. Once I migrate to the Cloud, we hope to authenticate using Microsoft Entra/Azure AD, which is integrated with our on-prem Active Directory. We aim to auto-provision users into our cloud instance via AD group membership. Will we need Atlassian Access to do this? Yes, Atlassian Access is required for automated user provisioning. Azure AD is a supported identity provider and we have setup instructions available.

  8. Is SSO/SAML only available on Enterprise Cloud? No, SSO/SAML is a feature of Atlassian Access. Access is a separate subscription. It is included with our Cloud Enterprise edition at no additional cost or can be purchased as an add-on to our other cloud editions.

Data Center

We’re aware that Data Center is still mission-critical for many of our customers and remain committed to continued support for all Atlassian customer journeys; whether you’re currently in the process of a Cloud migration or choose to remain self-managed for the foreseeable future. Data Center is our purpose-built enterprise offering for those organizations that must remain self-managed. To learn more about Data Center we recommend you visit the Data Center website and join the Data Center Community. If you would like to see upcoming investments to Data Center products check out the Data Center Roadmap.

  1. How I can migrate from Server to Data Center? Do you have a video about it? We recommend taking a look at our Data Center upgrade guide, which includes helpful tips and options for your upgrade.

If you decide a non-clustered upgrade is the right choice for your organization, upgrading is as easy as changing your license key. Check out how in our video demonstration “2 minutes to upgrade”.

  2. Has there been a consideration to reduce the low-tier user counts available for Data Center options (specifically Confluence for us)? We cannot migrate to Cloud, but the lowest tier of Confluence Data Center is many more users than we need and too expensive for a smaller shop like ours. Data Center is designed for enterprise teams. However, if your organization needs to meet certain compliance demands such as FedRAMP, we encourage you to contact Carahsoft, our exclusive transaction partner to see if you qualify for additional pricing options.

  3. Does Data Center still require a load balancer or can it be installed without (like Server)? You can run Data Center with the exact same architecture you’re currently using in Server. Data Center allows you to choose clustering based on your needs. Customers who don't require high availability can access most Data Center features without setting up a clustered architecture and additional infrastructure components. Learn more about our non-clustered architecture option here.

  4. Do the apps work the same between Server and Data Center? (e.g. Can ScriptRunner scripts be copied and used the same or will modifications be needed)? You can check if an app is Data Center approved on the specific app’s listing page in the Atlassian Marketplace:

    1. Go to Atlassian Marketplace.

    2. Select the app you’d like to see the details for

    3. In the “Hosting Type” dropdown, look for the Data Center option

Learn more about evaluating apps prior to your Data Center upgrade here.

  5. I have only 30 users but require ITAR compliance. Since your Cloud option doesn't meet ITAR/FedRAMP we are required to either move to the Data Center or move away from Atlassian altogether. Will Atlassian support small businesses in the Data Center with less than 500 users? If your organization is connected to the US Public Sector and has regulatory demands such as FedRAMP, we encourage you to reach out to Carahsoft to learn if you qualify for additional Data Center pricing options.
