Request for feedback: Shape the future of Public Links in Confluence

Hello community members!

I’m Tiffany, Associate Product Manager on the Confluence team. Last year, we launched Confluence Public Links that enabled anyone on the internet to view Confluence pages. Over the years, Confluence has adapted its capabilities to foster more collaboration and engagement amongst our users. But we know there is room to grow!

We’d love your feedback to help shape the future of Public Links in Confluence

In the comments below, please tell us about your experience using Public Links, specifically:

  • What kind of page content do you find yourself sharing as a Public Link?

    • Is it a single page or a grouping of pages?

  • Who are you sharing Public Links to and to how many people?

    • Are these individuals familiar with Confluence, in your team, etc.

  • How do you expect your Public Link visitors to interact with your Public Link? Do save it, respond to it, just read it?

  • How do you share your Public Link? Do you individually give your visitors a link, or do you post the link somewhere, etc.

  • How often do you find yourself sharing Public Links?

  • How long do you keep a Public Link ON before toggling OFF?

Lastly,

  • Are there other types of Confluence content you wish you could share via a Public Link that is not available today?

  • Any other functionalities you wish to have for Public Links?

Thank you so much for your feedback and looking forward to hearing your thoughts on these questions!

First of all, great feature that we and some of our clients have been waiting for! 😄

Here are some answers based on our experience:

  • Currently, we're only sharing single pages (atm we do not require to share group of pages)
  • Content usually contains some announcements or news (e.g. CVE/Security Advisory news)
  • We usually share the content with general public/our clients. That's mostly via company's LinkedIn and/or Facebook page
  • For the content we're sharing, we expect users only to read it. In case we need to collaborate, we simply add them as guests.
  • We share/create public links approx. 1-2 times a month. Expecting that this number will grow during this year.
  • For now, public links are turned on indefinitely.

Regarding new features, I would like to create public links for blogs as well, as all of our announcements usually go as blogs and therefore we have an issue there as we cannot create public links for those.

Hi @Tomislav Tobijas ! Thank you for your feedback and insight into your use case. On your point of sharing Public Links to general public/ your clients - do you know if your visitors have a need to save/reread or reuse your content, and if they do, how do they do so today?

And we hear you on Public Links for other Content Types and are happy to say that we are exploring this area!

Hi @Tiffany Chung,

I've come here because of your comment on CONFCLOUD-65481 which states that you are working on making emojis visible in pages shared via public links.

I'm not personally using Public Links but as a Marketplace partner and app developer I'm highly interested in the technical implications of this. Specifically, I would be interested in knowing if you plan on making only "Confluence standard emojis" show up, or also user-created custom emojis?

Thank you so much!

Cheers,
Sven

@Tiffany Chung

...do you know if your visitors have a need to save/reread or reuse your content, and if they do, how do they do so today?

Hmmm... Good question. I would say that, for now, they don't need to reuse the content. However, as we're making some client-only announcements or guides, that need to be reused, on our instance (Confluence), it would be great if we could easily share it with them too. By that, I mean we could create 'single source of truth' article/post on our Confluence site, create shared link and then post that on client's Confluence, whether as a page or a blog post.
I was thinking of embedding this public link content into another Confluence page at another site but it seems that this isn't yet supported?

So happy that this feature has rolled out. It is something I have had clients request throughout the years and now we have an answer.

This will require some formal policies to be determined at the organization level to ensure content is not being shared improperly.
