How to implement the Confluence Section 508 Accessibility Compliancy

Sanet Minnie August 13, 2012

I have just read this page: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DISC/Confluence+Section+508+Accessibility+Compliance

This page states that certain requirements have been met by Confluence, but it is not working in our Confluence, for example:

  • Improved keyboard accessibility for menus - the main menus can now be activated and navigated using the keyboard.
  • Added universal skip links to the top of all pages to skip to content, breadcrumbs, header menus, action menus, and quick search.

I cannot navigate Confluence (3.5) with a keyboard and I do not see the universal skip link.

Is there something I need to install to get this enhancement?

Part of the answer is "Confluence 4.2" - there are a number of improvements for accessibility in there that you simply won't get in 3.x

One thing that helped a couple of my clients was the Adaptavist Themebuilder - whilst it's a little complex to get there, it does enable administrators to add all sorts of accessiblity features that aren't done well (or at all) in the core of Confluence.

I can't speak for the universal skip though, I've not got that far into accessibility issues.

Yep, skip links and improved keyboard shortcuts are in 4.x, not 3.5.

Thank you :-)
