Google Chrome will not permit installation of Bonfire browser plugin

Matthew Smith August 6, 2012

The documented method of installing the Bonfire browser plugin for Google Chrome appears to have been broken - by Google.

JIRA happily redirects me to a page with a link to the Bonfire plugin download, but Chrome throws a nasty little popup:

"Extensions, apps, and user scripts can only be added from the Chrome Web Store."

There appears to be no option to override this, other than by performing some jiggery pokery with setting up policies, which appears to be only achievable if you do it before the first use of Chrome. At least, that's my understanding. This is under the 'Enterprise Administrators' link on the Google support page.

Does anyone have a way around this, or does Atlassian need get the plugin hosted on the Chrome Web Store, as the documentation suggests?

(EDIT: Note - this restriction is not present in the Chromium browser, only Google Chrome.)

For now you can install it manually.

We recommend you only add extensions from other websites that you trust. In Chrome, you can follow these steps to add the extension:

  1. Download the extension file from the website and save it to your computer.
  2. Click the wrench icon on the browser toolbar.
  3. SelectTools > Extensions.
  4. Locate the extension file on your computer and drag the file onto the Extensions page.
  5. Review the list of permissions in the dialog that appears. If you would like to proceed, clickInstall.

Thank you! I was a bit surprised that I was able to get this to work, as I'm not in a regular drag'n'drop environment, what with my window manager (WM) being Fluxbox.

However, just in case anyone else with a minimal WM environment comes across this, I figured that way to make this work would be to use a file manager from a fully-fledged WM might do the job - and was able to do it using Konqueror.

Many thanks to mhaderman for this solution.
