How to deactivate a user

Robert Hedges August 2, 2012

The Jira documentation mentions that a user can be deactivated.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA051/Managing+Users#ManagingUsers-Deactivatingauser

This process indicates that when I click on Edit in the Operations column of a user, there should be an Active check box, there is no such check box.

What is the proper way to deactivate a user from Jira On-Demand? A piece of additional information: We also have Confluence just in case that changes the procedure.

I just disabled a user in Jira on-demand, and i still see tickets that got assigned to him in agile board - how is this possible?

Depending on your setup/applications, the method can vary a bit. For an OnDemand instance with JIRA and Confluence, the option should be under application access (Admin ->Users ->Application Access).

If you go to Administrators > Users and clikc on a user, you will see a field Applications and checkbox against each application that you have.

You can uncheck JIRA from there.

Does that just prevent the user for accessing the applications? It does not appear that it does the deactivation which would return the license to the pool which is what I want to happen.

When you remove application access from a user, that prevents the user from being able to access the application and also releases the license for that application. You can see the number of available license seats on your license at the top of the application access page and confirm that the license seat was returned after you remove access.
