How do I disable JIRA autowatch by default?

Adam Yerkman April 22, 2012

I noticed the autowatch feature being implemented in JIRA 5.0.3, and it defaults to enabled for all users. I did a search through the documentation about defaulting it to disabled and didn't come up with any relevant pages. I did a Google search and found CONF-22070, which explains a way to default it to disabled in Confluence by editing a xml file. Is there a similar way to do this in JIRA?

A heads-up to all that are still interested: as of Jira 5.2.2, Autowatch can be disabled for all users under JIRA Admin > User Preferences. Good news for the OnDemand users, who coulnd't use the workaround requiring a plugin :)

Just wanted to add that Lars' fix is only partly effective. You would be able to disable the autowatch feature for all current users. However, all new users will have autowatch enabled. By running the script again, you would disable autowatch for all users, including the users that have chosen to enable the feature.

There really should be a way to set a global default value for the autowatch feature...

What happens when I add a new user. Do I have to rerun the script.

Or is it somethin to configure to automatically run?

It better be a good and stabile plugin.

Have I understand it right?

I need to install

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.onresolve.jira.groovy.groovyrunner

Then I can run a script that remove the fetaure.

This means that

0. Have to download and install plugin. After I've read throug what it does and how it might affect the instalations.

1. I need to restart Jira when installed (which I cannot do daytime)

2. Risk: Can get a plugin that harm the system

3. Run a script in a tool not supported by altassian

It certainly cost!

Not obvious where to find it.

Hmmm is ' script runner' some kind of plugin?

This feature relally steal time from me.

I know that I must turn the stuff off. Because I'm (as representative for Jira) losing a good reputation out there in my organization when spamming mail.

This functionality is currently not available. By going through the link provided by Ramiro, a script can be found that was posted by Jamie Echlin that can be run with the script runner plugin to disable it for everyone.

The problem is:

- I want as administrator to disable it for ALL by DEFAULT.

Then, it is up to each user to turn the feature on.

I'm desperate to turn it of (by default) globally.

The mails are too many and we already have a Notification scheme that we are pretty satisfied with. This adds up extra.

Hi Adam, here it is a recent question abou this matter:

https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/54126/can-jira-s-autowatch-be-disabled

Basically, you can disable the autowatch option per user in the user profile.

The documentation here:

http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/JIRA+5.0.3+Release+Notes#JIRA503ReleaseNotes-Autowatchissuesyoucreateorcommenton
