Test Case Management in JIRA

prasanthi kolluri April 11, 2012

Hi,

I am new to JIRA. I don't see options to enter test case in JIRA. Did anyone tried writing the test cases in JIRA? If, so can you please let me know how you acheived this using JIRA?

Thanks for you help in advance!

PK.

You should try Xray for JIRA. It is a Test Management Add-on released in 2014. It is the best option to do Test Management inside JIRA. It does not require an external product, everything works within JIRA.

In just 2 years Xray has grown to more than 1000 customers with a very solid rating and customer feedback.

Xray supports both manual and automated tests, provides a REST API and is growing feature-wise every release.

You can check all Xray features in the product documentation

They have a comparison of Xray against Zephyr (Zephyr was launched a couple of years before Xray).

The Xray Team is available for demos and webinars, you can contact them here.

Hi Prasanthi,

A little late here, but if you are still looking for a solution you may want to check out TestLodge test case management tool which is an external tool that integrates with Jira.

TestLodge is designed to be a lot simpler than traditional software by only providing the essentials to get the job done well. The system focuses on helping you create your test plans, input your requirements, create and manage your test suites and cases along with allowing you to easily perform multiple test runs and generate reports. The integration with Jira allows you to automatically create bug reports with all the relevant information whenever a test is marked as failed.

For more information you can view a video demo of this tool on the jira marketplace at https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/testlodge;jsessionid=ss2qz88aahtdf8pg8h4rfdqu

Hope this helps.

You shuld be aware that implementing test cases within Jira with a 'test case' issue type and custom fields comes with some serious limitations. Firstly you'll need to run the same test case multiple times and this then means copying the original test for each test cycle. This isn't easy to manage in Jira. Secondly Jira won't support the usual concepts of a test library and test suites/sets. Thirdly Jira's reporting isn't setup well to manage a test process in this manner. There's lots of other reasons that will limit your ability to manage the test process effectivley.

Better to select a separate test management tool that integrates with Jira. Then you get what Jira does well (issue management) and what you prefered test management tool does best (manage test cases).

Hope this helps.

I used confluence from JIRA , I create the test cases on there. I just create Modules or components as child pages and add a format :

<colgroup><col><col><col><col><col></colgroup>
ID:
Title:
Status:
Covered by Code: YES/NO
Assumptions:
Test data: User: admin@xxx / password:xxxx
Steps: Expected result: Comments:

Hi Yasmine

The only folks who are on JIRA 6.2 are those using JIRA OnDemand. Since you are using OnDemand, Zephyr for JIRA is not available.

However, you can also feel free to check out our stand alone test management products. We have two: a free version and a paid for version (Zephyr Community Edition and Zephyr Enterprise Edition). Our Community and Enterprise Editions tightly integrate with JIRA OnDemand and on premise. I suggest checking out the Community Edition first if you are interested. It is very similar to the Enterprise only with a few less features.

This is the version "6.2-OD-07-028", I downloaded this one but I could only see Zephyr Enterprise Connector in Add-ons list. I am not sure what is the difference between onDemand or onpremise but i think I have onDemand.

Hi Yasmine,

The reason I am asking for your JIRA version was to see if you are running JIRA OnDemand or on premise. If you are running JIRA OnDemand, Zephyr for JIRA will not be available. Currenlty Zephyr for JIRA is not compatible with JIRA OnDemand.

The Zephyr Enterprise Connector plugin will not do much for you uniless you have Zephyr Enterprise installed on a server and are running it.

Here is a link to the Zephyr for JIRA plugin in the Atlassian Marketplace:

Hi Yasmine,

I have a few additionl questions to help see what is going on:

1) What version of JIRA are you currently running?

2) Did you install the correct plugin? We do have two on the Marketplace. One is Zephyr for JIRA and the other is a connector to our Enterprise Edition. Please make sure you installed the plugin Zephyr for JIRA.

3) Any screen shots of what it is you are currently seeing are also helpful.

Kind Regards,

Emily

Hey Prasanthi,

In case you have not heard yet, if you have time you should check out Zephyr for JIRA. You can create test cases with Zephyr for JIRA and link them to existing defects. You can also execute the test cases along with their individual steps. Lastly, you can also import already existing test cases from an excel file into Zephyr for JIRA using the Zephyr for JIRA Tests Utility Importer. Below is a link to a free 30 day trial to see if the product is right for you:

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.thed.zephyr.je

Also, below is the link to the Zephyr for JIRA tests utility importer:

Emily

In my work I'm using an issue called exactly, 'Test Plan' and a sub-task called 'test cases'. I don't remeber if there were by default on Jira.

But basically, with these two issues you can have a test plan with many test cases where you add custom fields such as 'Expected result' and 'Actual Results'. Everything is customizable from the administration section and it is pretty easy.

By writing do you mean creating issues called 'test cases'?
