is there a smart search shortcut for search by labels? how about epics or epic themes? we use lots of labels to categorized issues and not being able to filter by them in quicksearch means that almost every search ends up being a two step process: quick search, then edit to narrow to a label

Not in the search field unfortunately, but you can do it by URL:

https://yourSiteName/wiki/dosearchsite.action?cql=siteSearch+~+""+and+label+%3D+"labelString"

Where yourSiteName = the base URL and labelString = the label you're looking for.

You could also, of course, use the Content by Label macro and just change the Label field.
