Both on Confluence 5.8 and 5.9 versions, the Multimedia macro works fine only with Chrome.

Conversely, it displays "A plugin is needed to display this content" with Firefox, and "An add-on for this website failed to run" with IE.

Do you encounter the same issue?

Yes, I have seen this too.

For the person who looks at that page, it seems to be dependant on their

  • browser type,
  • version of the browser and
  • what browser plugins are loaded, and
  • which version of Windows .

Some of this may be fixed by each person looking at that page with your multimedia file making sure they have Adobe Flash player installed as well as Quicktime.

But I would love to hear from someone if there is a guaranteed fix!

In order to give my options to the people accessing my Space, at the moment I am publishing three different pages for the same video clip one page as WMV, one as MOV and one as MP4.  And I am giving it as both a Multimedia macro player and as a file link to download.

Thanks for this workaround.

I even do not find another macro (paid or free) that offers the same features; do you know one?

Same probleme here, only works in Chrome and we are running IE as standard. So this is a big issue for us,

"Running IE as standard" .... that is likely to be a bigger problem than the video not playing.  Seriously! sad

Our experience is that IE causes many problems for advanced web tools using wiki editing, i.e. Confluence.

Apparently IE not fully HTML5 compatible.
This means that depending on the combination of version of IE (even the latest) and what Windows platform you have all sorts of different "bugs" appear .... sad

In one case, the User could not copy and paste text into the edit window and it tuned out to be a known IE issue:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-windows_7/internet-explorer-11-cannot-use-copy-paste-within/5b4489fc-9208-45d9-ac1d-b027fc494e7d

or do a search for "internet explorer 11 cannot use copy paste within"

In another case clicking Edit didn't do anything sad

In both cases changing to Firefox or Chrome solved the problem instantly (I was on the phone with them when they swapped and tried the other browser).

Whilst IT policies may be to use IE, normally once you talk to them they will allow you to install a second browser.  I actually have all four loaded as IE, FF, Chrome and Edge without problem.

Well I agree with you and normally prefer Chrome too. But our IT is running a Citrix Environment with IE only and many users do not have local software at all. Also we are using the MS Office-Integration a lot and I assume this is a limitation in Chrome and Firefox...

Pretty normal for many IT policies .. but as I mentioned, you can ask them to load a second "proper" browser for you which won't interfere with whatever other things but will allow you to get round any hiccups with IE if/when they occur smile
