Why could restricted pages not be edited by a space admin?

Efren Gonzalez March 20, 2016

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Page Restrictions

The documentation states that a Space admin can edit page restrictions. I was trying to do so, but as I don't have view permissions even for the page, it appears it doesn't let me do so, even if I have Space admin rights.

You have rights to edit the page rights, not the page itself. So you have to edit the page restrictions first, then you can edit. Go to space tools to view the restricted pages, and change from there (Space Tools -> Page Restrictions). There you will see a list and a note:

Restricted pages are those that have had either 'View' or 'Edit' restrictions enabled on the page edit screen.

This page allows a space admin to remove any page restriction within this space.

I didn't mean edit the page, I meant this page restriction/rights editing is failing. Whenever I click on a lock icon to remove a restriction, it just goes to the page. The page then shows: "You do not have permission to view this page." And also above it shows a warning, confirming I do have space admin rights: "You have temporary access to administrative functions. Drop access if you no longer require it. For more information, refer to the documentation."

There's also no way in the page restrictions edit page, to add my admin user to be able to edit the page.

Check the permissions tab under space tools to see if you have a green check mark under Restrictions. If you don't then, you may need a member of confluence-admin to enable it.

As mentioned above, my user has the restrictions permission granted (all of the permissions in fact) for the problematic space.

The same documentation claims:

You need 'Admin' permissions to view the list of restricted pages in a space.

Implying that if I can see the restricted pages, I already am an Admin

There's also no confluence-admin group sad, only site-admins and administrators

Are you on the cloud or server edition? The docs say

"Space Admin and System Administrator access to restricted pages
Users with 'Admin' permissions in a space, or users with the System Administrator global permission can remove restrictions from pages, even if the page restriction prevents them from viewing the page. Go to  Space Administration  >  Restricted Pages.

I am aware of the documentation, that's what I have repeated several times in this post. Please read the text. I have tried that and I already logged a support issue. Thanks for trying though.

Efren, I've come across the same issue, as a Space admin, I cannot edit page restrictions on a page that I don't have edit access to. Quite annoying that I have to ask someone who might not be an administrator, but who has edit access to grant permissions to restricted pages. I remember doing this in older versions of the cloud, why was this changed? The documentation is wrong, out of date or there is a bug.

Did you get a solution from Atlassian?

Efren Gonzalez April 20, 2016

Hi Hamish, please look at the answer above, there's a link to the support ticket. It had to be fixed by someone on Atlassian who could fix the indexing on our pages.

Cheers!

Efren

Efren,

I don't believe that most people will have access to that link. When I try, I get "You do not have permission to view this request." Can you copy / paste the relevant bits from that page here for us?

Efren Gonzalez December 4, 2016

Hi David,

Most of the details were posted here. The support link was mainly adding the URL information and someone on the support team fixed it by running some process over our page index.
