How to change the default group upon creation of new user account

Christopher Jones February 9, 2016

When user accounts are created in confluence, they are by default set to be members of the group confluence-users.

I am a confluence-administrator who has a need to change the default group to something else, because I need to invite signups from a different set of users, and I don't want to get them mixed up with my existing confluence-users, for a number of reasons.

How can I change the default group to something else, like confluence-temporaryguest?

Can this be done with a setting in the console or internal directory? - If necessary, I am happy to editing some of the wiki markup, or change a line of java code somewhere. (I am a confluence-administrator but not a system-administrator.)

Alternatively, can the invitation link be customised to specify which groups the user will be a member of? (This needs to be automatic since there will be several hundred new users who will need to sign themselves up.)

Thanks,

There must be someone out there who knows the answer to this question?

Did you ever find a resolution for this?

Unfortunately, it's what I said in the answer in 2016, and the comment on it is wrong.

The group people are added to automatically is determined by the "can log in" group(s) in global permissions.

If you want to change that, you can, but remember that it also lets people log into Confluence.

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately, that is incorrect.

In the version of confluence that I'm using the "can use" option in the Global Permissions part of the admin console has nothing to do with the default group assigned to new accounts when they are set up.

If you really can do this in your version of confluence, I would be interested to see a screenshot. - In that case maybe I can solve the problem by upgrading (but I'm a bit doubtful of this).

I know that in the Edit Security Configuration section, you can delegate user management to JIRA, but this isn't what my question is about.

For anyone reading this 5 years later.

I had this issue today as well. In a Confluence instance we replaced the confluence-users group by another one and removed confluence-users.

Creating users in the internal directory was not possible anymore until we added the group again.
