Bitbucket project logos are missing

Gonçalo Lopes January 27, 2016

Starting from yesterday (January 26, 2016) all custom project logos in Bitbucket appear to be missing. This has happened across all my projects and also across multiple projects of other teams that I have been in contact with so it seems like a general thing.

In addition, the option to customize the project logo is gone from the repository settings.

Can anyone from Atlassian clarify what's going on? Are all the logos lost?

Hi Gonçalo,

With the introduction of the new projects feature, a new way to group repositories for teams, repository-specific avatars are no longer supported. You can now group your repositories into projects and upload an avatar for that project.

You can read more about projects here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/BITBUCKET/Projects

You can still access the original repo avatar at https://bitbucket.org/<owner>/<slug>/avatar/ if you need to grab a copy of it.

Thanks,

Alastair

Will grouping repositories into a project means that the repository will get its logo for the project automatically? It seems like an incredibly bureaucratic and complicated process... you have to create a team, then create a project for that team, then change the avatar... even if there was never a team, or the project has only one repository...

It brings to mind the golden rule "don't fix what ain't broken".

I guess this means Bitbucket is giving up on individual users, huh?

Also, this makes no sense even for repositories which do share the same project... I may want to logically group repositories into a project, but still want to have slight variations of the project logo to identify each repository individually... sorry, but I don't really understand the reasoning for this, especially if it was working before.

Hi Gonçalo,

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, if you group repositories into a project, the project avatar will generally be displayed with the repository across the UI.

Thanks,

Alastair

It would seem to be more useful, if each repository could always still set its own logo.

Then it becomes a matter of what logo to use when the repo doesn't set its own logo.

If the repo was a member of a project, the project logo could be used as the repo default logo.

If the repo is not a member of project, some other default logo could be used, and if no team is involved, then use the users avatar.

Hi Bill and Gonçalo,

We're actually planning to bring repository avatars back! Check out our blog post about upcoming improvements to Projects, which includes repository avatars:

So sad that individual repository emblems are now gone. I thought it's just hidden. sad

In fact, you can now opt in to this feature! Check it out on the "Manage Features" page under settings.
