Hi,

Recenently today I have had some issues regarding reindexing JIRA, it simply failed and I got displayed the error page. Now it seems to be fine but a few files have shown under the data/caches/indexes/issues/ location.

They are a few .fnm files .fdt etc.

So my question is can the files under:

data/caches/indexes/issues/

be deleted/removed? What are they for? to me it looks like they were created when the issues occured.

I ask because the file sizes are quite big, some at 400mb.

Thank you.

Nope, those files are the index.  If you delete them, search, the issue navigator and all sorts of stuff will stop working.  No data loss, but JIRA won't really work for you.

You could remove them, but only if you are planning to run a full re-index to rebuild them.

I wouldn't do that yet though.  Start by looking at the errors you are having with the re-indexing.  You'll need to fix them before you can do much else.  What did the main error say, and what is in the logs?

Hi, I do not remember the error exact to the word, but it was something to do with error retrieving SELECT xx FROM xx etc. Basically an error with retrieving some data. The system was also running slow, and so tried to re-index again, to find that background index is no longer allowed (the corrupt message) so now I am waiting for the lock-jira reindex to happen once users log out. Also I will shut down JIRA and restart and clear the catalina.out too. I also did Integrity checker and fixed all issues that were shown there. System for now seems to be running good. Except for Background reindex not being allowed, which'll hopefully fix once I do the lock JIRA reindex.. Memory is an issue for me, as the server is 57/59GB full.

I should say by clearing catalina.out, I mean backing it up from the server to external hdd and deleting it from server

By memory, I assume you mean disk space? That is going to be a problem, if it isn't one already. You need to monitor that closely, especially as the indexing can create some quite large files while it runs. I'd check the exports directory under jira-home as well - if you've left the standard xml backups running, you could have a load of files in there gradually eating up your disk. If that has happened, I would keep the last handful, but delete most of the old ones. You say you're going to clear out catalina.out before indexing, that's not a bad idea at all. I'd also see if you can archive (i.e. compress and move off the server) the contents of data/logs too - you'll get clean error logs that way, and possibly get a bit of disk space back.

Haha great minds think alike ? lol, thanks for the info. Um in terms of other files, other than the logs themselves is there anything else I can compress and move over to external ? You mentioned data/logs. Thanks.

Also for backups I do regular house keeping, all backups are made each week and then moved over onto external so nothing is left on the server itself.

Ah, if you've got the import and export directories, and you're covering the logs, that's about it really. Everything else is needed for JIRA to work. There are things you can delete while it is offline (caches), but it just rebuilds them as it needs them, so you're unlikely to gain much. You might also want to check data/temp for image thumbnails. I've only seen it once, but they weren't being cleared out and had grown to a silly size - it was the graphs that were doing them. Deleting them was harmless (but, as caution rules, move them to the external disk, just in case) You do say you backup every week though - is that the internal xml?

Yeah, that is the general Automated Backup which you can set to occur. which then has it under the export folder. In the import it just has two empty folders Attachments and Emails.

Actually going onto the Import again, there seems to be one folder in the "Attachment" section which has a couple of files, can all of these be deleted ? what is "Import" folder actually used for within JIRA?

If you put files in there, you can import them. I have a feeling the importers copy uploaded files there too, but don't quote me on that. My instinct is to say they can be removed as well, as I think they're temporary files.
