For several of our states, we have a custom field to remember who made the transition, such as "Fixed By" or "Reviewed By". Then if we need to reopen a bug, we automatically assign it, Assignee = Fixed By person

So does that mean that the only way to accomplish automatically assigning an issue to the previous assignee is to capture that person's ID in a custom field, and then through the post function assign the issue to the person identified in that custom field?

Hello Mike,

what type is your custom field for the previous assignees? Thank you very much.

This can also be done using Assign to last role member in script runner post function

The JIRA Misc Workflow Extensions add-on from Innovalog has an Assign to last role member post-function that can do this.  I'm not positive, but I believe this post-function is included in the cloud version of the add-on.
