Edit in office link is not working in Confluence

Rumceisz January 26, 2012

Hi All,

not sure if somebody posted yet, but I have the following problem:

in Confluence I'd like to open my attached Word document to edit and after authorisation, an empty(!) document comes up. I use Win XP.

Have you any suggestions why we meet this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Rumceisz

Hi,

There may be a number of reasons why this is not working for you. Firstly, there are a couple of registry settings in Windows XP that can prevent Office from opening documents via WebDAV.

Check the value of the 'OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing' registry key: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870853

And the value of the 'UseBasicAuth' registry key: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841215

I once made the experience that the WebDAV stuff has very high demands. In my case the context path of Confluence was not empty and WebDAV didn't work...

Unfortunately Microsoft has a poor track record of releasing WebDAV clients with a number of crippling bugs. Have a look at http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/webdav-redirector-list.html and http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/webfolder-client-list.html for a depressingly comprehensive list.

The particular problem you mention about context paths is unfortunately a bug in the Microsoft WebDAV client, which assumes that the root path of the server is WebDAV aware. :-(

Have you tried to install this fix from Microsoft? That's what helped us...

My next bet would have been the registry settings like Joseph said. We actually had to manually set the UseBasicAuth value.
