Resolve subtask on creation of another subtask

My current project has issues that will never have more then 2 subtasks but requires only one subtask to be in progress at any given time. Upon issue creation, an initial subtask is created automatically.

Currently, I have a Script Runner listener that auto-creates the second subtask based upon changes made to a radio button custom field. At that point, I was wanting it to also resolve the original subtask. I'm thinking that it'll have to be another listener but am at a loss on where to start.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Can you just update the listener to close an existing sub-task (if there's any) before it creates a new sub-task?
