Why did subtasks that were converted to stories before completing sprint because they were not complete, not carry over to the backlog?

I have a user that had subtasks in a sprint that they converted to stories prior to closing sprint and they had not yet been "completed". When the user completed the sprint, they expected those stories to auto carryover and go to the backlog, but they didn't. Why did that happen? And is there any way to get them back?

Using Downloaded version of Jira 6.0.4 and Jira Agile 6.3.5

It appears that the "Convert to Issue" did not work, but the subtasks did carry over correctly when the sprint was closed. The subtasks were not visible to the user because they were looking on the "Planning" bview of the scrum board and subtasks do not show up there only in the work view. After further review, the issue here is not that they didn't carry over correctly as issues, but that the "Convert to Issue" didn't work right, as the user says that they did that process. Consider this question resolved. We will be testing the Convert to Issue functionality as a result.
