confluence database update

anderson hsu September 2, 2015

Dear Sir,

We tried update confluence from version 4.2.13 to 5.8. Because our database is located at the different server, we found probably the reason caused confluence can not run . (We have finished update step, but it can not run ) . How can we update confluence database to version 5.8 format ? Thank you.

Hi Anderson,

Can you share what your logs under <confluence-home-directory>/logs/atlassian-confluence.log say?

In case you are not sure where the <confluence-home-directory> is located, please refer to this documentation: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Confluence+Home+and+other+important+directories

Also please share with us what was the upgrade steps you took so we can see if you've missed any step.

When we run the command : ./etc/init.d/confluence restart , it show the message as listed as below: Server startup logs are located in /opt/atlassian-confluence-4.2.13/logs/cataling.out Using CATALINA_BASE: /opt/atlassian-confluence-4.2.13 Using CATALINA_HOME: /opt/atlassian-confluence-4.2.13 Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /opt/atlassian-confluence-4.2.13/temp Using JRE_HOME: /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-sun Using CLASSPATH: /opt/atlassian-confluence-4.2.13/bin/bootstrap.jar Using CATALINA_PID: /opt/atlassian-confluence-4.2.13/work/catalina.pid PID file found but no matching process was found. Stop aborted. Starting Tomcat: No directory, logging in with HOME=/ Probably we update fail. thank you.

As Eduardo said, we need the logs he described. All you've given us here is the output of the startup process, we need the logs that Tomcat and Confluence generate as they start (and fail)

Thank you for your reply. Maybe I have found the reason as listed as below: 2015-09-02 09:51:39,329 INFO [localhost-startStop-1] [springframework.web.context.ContextLoader] initWebApplicationContext Root WebApplicationContext: initialization completed in 51385 ms 2015-09-02 09:51:39,631 ERROR [localhost-startStop-1] [confluence.upgrade.impl.DefaultUpgradeManager] runUpgradePrerequisites Current license is not valid: SUPPORT_EXPIRED 2015-09-02 09:51:39,875 ERROR [localhost-startStop-1] [atlassian.confluence.upgrade.UpgradeLauncherServletContextListener] contextInitialized 1 errors were encountered during upgrade: 2015-09-02 09:51:39,875 ERROR [localhost-startStop-1] [atlassian.confluence.upgrade.UpgradeLauncherServletContextListener] contextInitialized 1: <p>Confluence support and upgrades for your current license have expired.</p><p>Please access <a href="http://my.atlassian.com">My Atlassian</a> as the license contact and purchase a license renewal for Confluence. If you have a new license, please enter it on this <a href="$CONTEXT/fixonly/fixlicense.action">page</a> and <b>restart</b>.</p><p>Alternatively, you can continue using Confluence by rolling back to a previous version. To do this you must perform a clean installation of Confluence of the version that needs to be restored then restore the confluence home directory to its pre-upgrade state. No database restorations need to be made. Maybe the license our confluence installed used virtual box has expired, does it mean we can not update confluence when our license is expired? thank you.

Hi Anderson,

I believe your current installation of Confluence 5.8 is not synced with your existing home-directory from the previous version of Confluence. The database configuration is specified into the confluence.cfg.xml file which is located in this directory.

We need to confirm if you have the correct path for the home directory configured. Please access the install-directory/confluence/WEB-INF/classes/confluence-init.properties file. This file will contain the path for the home-directory. Please make sure this is the same one you had in the previous version of Confluence.

Also, for the full upgrade process, please make sure you follow the instructions from this guide.

Regards,
LM

You can't really.  The only good way to upgrade a Confluence database is to upgrade Confluence, letting it do all the work for you.

If your system is not running after an upgrade, you need to look at why - what does the log file say is incorrect?  If it's "data is old and I can't upgrade it", then you'll need to roll-back to the backup you took and re-try the upgrade and fix the errors as you go.

Right, so the logs tell you everything.  Your expired licence absolutely will block an upgrade.

You can only upgrade to a version of Confluence that was released before the end date on an expired licence.
