Best way to track planned vs Actual time and variance

Vaishail September 1, 2015

Hi,

We want to track  Planned time, Actual time and get Variance for story and task.

We want to have Separate estimate for Dev and for QA.

So it is as follows:

Planned time

  1. Planned Dev time
  2. Planned QA time
  3. Total ( Dev + QA ) planned time

Actual Time

  1. Actual Dev Time
  2. Actual QA time
  3. Total ( Dev + QA) Actual Time

Variance

  1. Variance Dev time ( Actual - Planned)
  2. Variance QA time ( Actual - planned)
  3. Total Varience ( Dev + QA) ( Actual -Planned)

Note about variance:

One way to do this is add custom fields to capture all values.

Is there a better way to do this than adding custom fields?

Thanks,

  • Vaishali

You can track time without Tempo, merely using the built-in JIRA "worklog" features, but you will not be able to create custom reports without add-on. There is no two separate categories for the work, so you will probably need to add number type custom fields for those...

Better Excel Plugin can easily calculate the totals and the variance for you, from Tempo data, from JIRA worklogs or from custom fields, whichever approach you will take.

Have you tried tempo?

Tempo plugin allows you to plan time for developers and also track actuals.

Hi Thanks for the pointer. We don't know whether we can use the plugin as of now. This certainly could be long term plan. I am looking for a way within JIra.

If there is something we can do within Jira
