How can I embed a Wistia-hosted video to my confluence page?

Kevin Mulcahy January 13, 2014

I need to embed Wistia-hosted videos on my Confluence pages but am having no luck.

I've used the "Widget Connector" to embed YouTube videos and that works fine. But when I use the Widget Connector to embed a Wistia-hosted video - I'm having no luck - the system just shows a widget Icon or gives an error message saying it couldn't be saved.

Below are the links I'm trying to use for embedding on via teh Widget Connector - nieither work.

Any ideas? This is pretty urgent... Thanks very much.

You'll want to use the iframe macro that's provided with Adaptivist's Content Formatting Macros ( included in Confluence OnDemand ):

http://www.adaptavist.com/doco/display/CFP/iframe+Macro

And be sure to utilize https instead of http otherwise client browsers will recieve mixed-content warning messages

Jeff: Thanks very much ... that worked!

Here's the url that I put into the Iframe marco:

https://fast.wistia.net/embed/iframe/3qs9cep2o9

I was able to get "fast.wistia.net/embed/iframe/3qs9cep2o9" from Wistia

and added the "https://" and now it works great. We'll have lots of wistia videos embedded nicely on our ConflueneOnDemand pages. Thanks again.

Are you admin on your instance?

You can activate Confluence Html Macros (included in Confluence, but disabled by default). Note that inserting HTML allows any other user to execute code on your behalf on this page (For example, malicious attacks like deleting a space, etc). So you need to trust all users on the instance.

Concerning the integration of Wistia and Confluence, this page appears second on Google for "Wistia Confluence", and the third result is CONF-28602 which is marked as "Won't Fix".

Hi Adrien - Thanks -- when do you think Wisita might get on your supported list?. Below is an email from my contact at Wistia customer support. Could you guys work this out together and get Wistia on there? Thanks again

Hi Kevin,

I'd really like to help you get your videos working. It is ultimately up to the folks at Atlassian to decide what type of services they'll support embedding in Confluence, though. I definitely agree with you, it would be pretty fantastic if Wistia were on that list of supported video services.

I was going to send an email over to Atlassian about this to see what we can do to get Wistia on that list, but the trouble is I can't seem to find a support email address. (You wouldn't happen to have it, would you?) If you'd like to loop them in on this email, or start a separate chain, I'll be happy to help out however I can!

Best,
Dave

Ok, that's right, it's not possible to use the Html macro on OnDemand. I don't think there is any other solution in your situation.

I don't think Adrien is an Atlassian! You probably want to raise this with Atlassian even if he is, at https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/aod

Hi Kevin,

Nic is right, I'm not an Atlassian employee (If it's written somewhere that I work at Atlassian, please report it to me and I'll have it taken down). I volunteer help on Answers, like Nic Brough does. Atlassian employees have an [Atlassian] tag after their name on Answers.

Given Atlassian has answered "Won't fix" on CONF-28602, I think the only way you can get it supported would be if some consultant would be to write an Atlassian Connect add-on for OnDemand that would support Wistia videos.

Regards,

Adrien

NB: A lot of independant consultants are reading this forum so if you're interested in a paid Atlassian Connect add-on, communicate it.

I approve Jeff Curry's answer: It is indeed possible to use Adaptavist's iFrame macro. That's how we all learn ;) Thanks Jeff for providing the right answer!

Hi Adrien

Thanks very much for your response. I'm not a system admin on our instance and person who has the highest admin privileges for Confluence here says that even he can't access the Confluence Html Marcos because we are using "Confluence OnDemand"? Does that sound correct to you?

I do see this note on the page you referred to me:

(warning) The information on this page does not apply to Confluence OnDemand.

Do you have any other ideas on how we can get around this? We really need to get our wistia-hosted vidoes embedded on Confluence. Wistia is a great hosting service -- and Confluence is a great wiki system -- if only they could work togehter for us.

Thanks again!
