How to convert a bug to a story

Torri L. Fisher August 26, 2015

To get all of our items in from another system, we initially entered everything into JIRA as a bug; it reflected reality.  Now we want to convert some of them to Stories so we can estimate, manage and place into a Sprint.  How can I convert the bug or support request to a story to avoid 2 windows and copy& pasting.

If your project has an "issue type scheme" that includes Bugs and Stories, AND they are configured the same, then you can just edit the type as though it were a field.

If your project doesn't have stories, you'll need to get them added.

If the config is different between types, then you will have to use move to do it - move the issue into the same project and select a different type as you do it.

Whether moving or editing, you'll be able to do loads of them in one go if you use bulk edit

Holy schmoley sounds awesome! I did try the edit and clone, but not the move. I'm thinking I am not configured; apples can only be apples and oranges, oranges. I will try the "move" now!! Thank you!

That worked BEAUTIFULLY, THANKS!! Now to understand the bulk edit...! Thank you, well done!

:-) Check the "global permissions" for who can use bulk edits. Once you can, run a search to cover the issues you want to convert (doesn't have to be exact, you can deselect issues later), and then check the tools near the top right for "bulk change". It will guide you through

In the bug, click on More button and select "Convert to SubTask" and then in the next page add Parent issue/story and in Select Sub-task Type: row select Story Bug in the dropdown, by default story task is selected. Next follow the steps and the bug will be converted to story bug and can see the bug under story

No, that's incorrect. as Bugs and Stories are at the same level in this question.  The question is not about sub-task conversion.
