Word document attached to JIRA won't open

Steve Swett August 3, 2015

I'm using MS Office 2013.  I created a simple Word document with the words "This is a test document" then saved it and attached to a JIRA cloud issue using the "Browse" link.  When I try to click it in the issue to open it, it downloads it but then gives a pop-up window "Word experienced an error trying to open the file."

We just noticed the problem for the first time this weekend.  What's up?

Does this happens with all word docs you use? Last time I saw that it was protected view that was giving me the headache smile:

Try above method and see if it will do the trick.

That did it for me, Lavitz. Thanks! A more seamless way to work with Word attachments in JIRA Cloud would be nice - since I experience the problem even if I upload the file and then download it again. At least you pointed me in the right direction! Eventually, we'll move to Confluence.

This only occurs when using IE to access JIRA Cloud.

If I use Chrome then there is an Open button displayed and the attachment will open when the button is clicked.

We've been using Chrome.  Thought I'd test IE for kicks.  Problem occurs in Chrome and IE.

I agree with the IE issue. This happened to us with files being hosted in an Atlassian tool and download it using IE. Try another browser.

The one thing I can think of and it could be that .docx files are not being downloaded correctly because of JAVA. I had the same problem with IE. It took a little troubleshooting to figure out the issue.

Steve,

Does the document name contain any special character? This issue might be related to CONF-31088.

Thanks and regards,
Paula Silveira
