Confluence XML backup fails with 'java.io.IOException No space left on device' Due to Disk Space

William Rojas (Black Diamond) August 1, 2015

While doing an XML backup, we got a 'java.io.IOException No space left on device' Due to Disk Space. from writing to the root partition.  The Confluence Home directory partition has plenty of room.  Once the root was expanded the backup completed fine.

  • What is XML backup writing to the root partition while it's executing?
  • In the future is there a way to have this i/o directed to another volume? -root partitions are typically small.

The operating system may have used a bit too much /tmp or other working space while supporting the JVM, and Confluence (well, the Tomcat running Confluence) will chew up space on the installation directory too (typically under /opt if it's a default installation

There's no way of knowing what filled up your disk without a full analysis of what is on the root partition and what was happening during the xml backup.  Once you know what it was, then you can probably work out a way to relocate it.
