attaching a file for download in Confluence 4.0

I want to create a download link for a source code snippet. I'm doing this:

Edit > Insert > Attachment > Choose File > Save

but I'd prefer to be able to edit the link text. Is there any way to do that outside of using wiki markup?

Sorry for last answer, was doing it blind.

Just tried on my 4.0.5 install and I can Edit -> Insert -> Attachment -> Choose File and there's a "Link Text" field for entering custom link text at the bottom of the insert dialogue before hitting Save.

Which is better than my last answer :)

I have a Link Text at the bottom of the Edit Link dialog, but to make it editable I have to go through that kludgy workaround I posted.

Just tried again and I think I know what you mean now.

If you're attaching a file for the first time and select Edit (as in edit the page, not edit on an existing attachment in the editor) -> Insert -> Attachment -> Choose File the Link Text box should be editable so you can enter the required text from the first insert and don't have to go through the upload -> delete -> insert -> search loop.

If you click on Ediit on an existing linked attachment in the editor then the Link Text field is uneditable, which seems like a UI oversight to me. I can't see an existing ticket for this behaviour so I'll raise one with Atlassian.

If you've got existing links to attachments that you need to edit the only other way I can think of is, in the editor, delete the link to the attachment, press "[" to trigger autocomplete, use down arrows to select search, start typing the name of the attachment and enter text in the Link Text field before hitting save. Potentially faster than deleting and inserting via the Insert menu as you can do everything from the keyboard, but not much better.

The "Link Text" field was editable today. Seems like maybe there's a bug but I don't know how to duplicate it.

Hmm, kludgy but possible. I have to upload the file, delete that link, insert a new link, search for and select the file, and then I can edit the link text.
