Can I highlight items in the backlog instead of filtering?

Michael Mühlebach July 22, 2015

We have medium sized backlog of about 300 items which not always that easy to overview but its manageable.

It gets really hard although when we wanna focus on a set of specific items in context of the whole backlog. For instance if we:

  • Priories newly added items
  • Split large top stories
  • Re-/estimate items

We try to do all this with labels and quick filters. But with filters everything else is hidden so its not possible to priories an items and it is hard to reestimate an items because you do not see existing estimates.

Of course we could 1. set the filter, 2. select the top item, 3. remove the filter, 4. do the work, 5. remove label and restart. But this is so tedious my team (including me) would probably run out of the room.

So my actual question:

Is there another cool way to do the work above described?

Or is there a way to use quick filters as just highlighters instead actually hide everything else?

You could try going to Board > Configure > Card Colors and setup different colors based on Queries instead of the default setting of colors based on Issue Type. You can even do this temporarily, do your prioritization, then switch back to the issue type color scheme once you're done prioritizing.

This seems to only work when viewing cards and not displaying the backlog.  Has anyone found a way to change colors or use other highlighting tools for this situation?

I have the same problem. I want to see where in the backlog an issue is located so I can move it up or down, but when I filter I do not see where it is located in the backlog. The context is removed. This makes it hard to do backlog grooming.

I am also interested in << a way to use quick filters as just highlighters >>. So that, all issues remain at their own place (both in the Backlog view, and in the board view), they do NOT disappear. But the issues that fit into the "filter criteria" are simply highlight: by this, they can be seen and found easily.
