Order the fields returned by API

Fields requested from the API always comeback in a order that doesn't appear to be controllable, for example:

&fields%3Did,key,summary,duedate,priority,status,project,assignee,rank

returns this order: priority, status, and project before duedate . Why is this, and can this be controlled?
