Can I use the "user mention" feature in the template variable?

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Working with Templates

It would be very helpful if the @user Mention function would be available when filling out the template variables when creating a new page from a template. Is there some way to accomplish this?

Sadly no. Templates are a bit under-powered in my opinion. You could probably do it with a blueprint, but the learning curve is a bit higher to write one of those.
