External users

Alejandro Illes July 7, 2015

Hi,

I need to know how to add and manage external clients and partners to don't use more jira-users licence.

Please take a look of my JIRA dashboard attached and let me know how can I do that from there.

Thanks!

You can't. Your options are:

  1. Have a open instance of JIRA, and allow anonymous access.
  2. Interact with these people as Service Desk Customers.

Besides that, any user you want to give access to your private JIRA data must have a JIRA account and will count towards your license.

Hi,

Could you please explain me what is the functionality of an anonymous user? If I set that, which are the anonymous users with access?

Thanks!

Anonymous access means anyone can access your JIRA instance, literally, anyone, without having a JIRA user and passowrd. It is even possible to allow these 'users' to add data and modify the data you already have in JIRA. Is not a thing you want to have in your JIRA instance if you have data. After enable the anonymous access, as per link I put in my first response, you can set which permissions the anonymous users will have (like just browse issues, or create and modify issues) . As a example, Atlassian has a instance like that in http://jira.atlassian.com/, which is our public bug tracker. Anyone can browse the content of the instance, but it need to have a JIRA account to modify or add new data to it.

Hi, Alejandro.

That's right. After all, JIRA is billed based on users.

Actually, in Cloud you can't even have external users (for example, from LDAP), which wouldn't help in billing either way.

As Teilor mentioned, you can use Service Desk customers or allow anonymous access.

Kind regards,

Thanks for both answers.

Based on those, you meant that I can allow external people without adding them to JIRA, correct?

Best,

Ale

Only if you allow them *anonymous* access (i.e. the whole world can see it) or you use *service desk* accounts, which only allow them to see limited parts of JIRA related to the requests they've made. In other words, make @TAS ' answer correct.

Click on the Cog icon >> Administration >> User Management.

In this section, you will be able to add new users, and also remove users from jira-users group.

By clicking in the Group section, you can manage the group membership of your users.

Cheers,

Pedro Souza
