How to prevent a * from becoming a bullet?

Hopefully basic question. I'm trying to simply type a * character on the first line of a paragraph and the confluence editor is transforming into a bullet. How do I prevent this?

Under "Settings" of your user account you may disable autoformatting in the editor.

And if you do not switch it off completely: Ctrl-Z (on windows) undoes the autoformat.

I've tried both ~* and \* and nope that's not doing it.

You escape it, I think with the tilde character or backslash:

Either 
~* this
or
\* this
should work.
