Hard limit reached. What to do?

dave carney July 1, 2015

Zoinks! My repo got out of the backyard and ran wild through the neighborhood. Now its' breached the 2GB limit. I've read over the documentation on how to split a repo, but can't follow the steps to do so because it is already locked. Is there anything I can do to get my repo back in working order?

Hi Dave,

Be sure to e-mail Bitbucket support (support@bitbucket.org) or use the help links within Bitbucket to access our support portal when this happens – we can remove the limit to allow you to push again. We recommend you take a look at the following article: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/BITBUCKET/Maintaining+a+Git+Repository

There are a few options, however, I recommend using http://rtyley.github.io/bfg-repo-cleaner/ as it's the easiest and most straight forward. It's always a good idea to keep a cloned copy as a backup in case something bad happens. Once you've made your changes and removed the files, simply tell us and we can perform the necessary garbage collection on our end.

Cheers,

Jesse
