This is a fairly basic issue. I'd like to know how to report results of an operation (such as an update of issue fields) or exception status from an event listener to the user causing the event. What is the best practice?

Listener is a separate thread and hence the best way I can think of is to send a mail to the user. Maybe you can throw a custom event and have a special error template for the event! And add people to that event in the notification schemes!
