In the Plan mode the Backlog is, obviously enough, labelled 'Backlog'.
For one of the projects that we are using JIRA for the label 'Backlog isn't really suitable. Is it possible to change this label somehow?

Unfortuantely, there is not a way to change this (at least that I have ever found), as it is native to the program and not a configurable field.
