Error building POM (may not be this project's POM).

I had updated the latest SDK and when I clean my plugin I am getting the following error message

[INFO] Error building POM (may not be this project's POM).

Project ID: org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-clean-plugin

POM Location: C:\Users\spatruni\.m2\repository\org\apache\maven\plugins\maven-clean-plugin\2.2\maven-clean-plugin-2.2.pom

Reason: Not a v4.0.0 POM. for project org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-clean-plugin at C:\Users\spatruni\.m2\repository\org\apache\maven\plugins\maven-clean-plugin\2.2\maven-clean-plugin-2.2.pom

Modified the maven path in settings.xml file and the issue was resolved.

I am using the following Maven version.

Apache Maven 2.1.0 (r755702; 2009-03-18 12:10:27-0700)

Is that the reason?
