Confluence takes a long time to load pages

Richard May 28, 2013

Hi, this is a new Confluence installation with only a handful of pages, however loading pages takes a long time (20 to 30 seconds).

I have turned on the profiling to find out if there is anything in the logs that would help me but that doesn't seem to yield any major issues.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi I disabled all user added plugins and it seems to be faster now. Going to enable them one by one and see if I can pinpoint which one is the trouble maker!

Thanks all for there suggestions.

According to this scenario, I guess you can try increasing memory just for test purpose:

Also I'd suggest to analzye the database and improve the performance, please check this documentation:

I hope this information helps!

Hi,

We have Confluence 5.7.1 with MS-SQL database running on separate machine on same network.

The pages around 5MB with couple of macros take a long time to load.

Is there any limitations from Atlassian for the size, macro, images to load the pages smoothly?

Kind Regards,

Om

Stuart,

it might also be to do with a page that's loading. We've got a page that slows Confluence down to a halt as soon as someone tries to open it. It seems to be a normal page, it has a couple of macros linking to Jira, but there's nothing big and heavy on it. Yet every time we try to open it, it puts the brakes on.

There doesn't seem to be a rational explnation for it, but it's entitely consistent in its behaviour.

We're going to delete it via the database, then have a farewell party. :)

Hi Stuart, what version of Confluence are you running? If there's only a handful of pages and not a lot of plugins, it should be fine. It does use that much memory, there's no issues with it. There are a lot of features.

You'd need to work out where it's slow. Are you running a remote database? Is it a network issue? What browser are you using? Have you tried another browser. I'd first element client side issues, i.e. browser/operating system and then network connectivity issues before looking at Confluence itself.

Hi Harry, I am running 5.1.3 which I think is the latest.

The database is a MS SQL database running on a different machine (But on the same network - in fact they are sat next to each other physically). I am using Firefox mainly but the same issue arrises on Internet Explorer and I have tried on other machines.

If you did a ping and ruled out server to server latency and there's no packet loss we can rule that out. It could be a particular plugin? Is it every page? Even a blank page?

An errors in the logs? Could the database be locking up? Have you tried a thread dump?

I looked in the System information screen and noticed the Memory usage for JAVA seemed quite high, could this be the problem? If so how can I increase the maximum.

Maximum Heap Size 494 MB
Total Allocated Memory 494 MB
Used Memory 385 MB
Free Allocated Memory 109 MB
Total Free Memory 109 MB
