Exposing Selective Wiki content to 3rd party

Colm O'Brien April 14, 2013

We are looking to allow access to a space in our wiki to a 3rd party.

Much of our wiki content is un-restricted as it is currently only used internally on our intranet by company employees. Is there a straight-forward way to allow the 3rd party access to a specific space(and only that space) without exposing all existing content??

Hallo Colm

As a first step, you'll need to protect every space (except the one) from "anonymous" access. The documentation is here:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Assigning+Space+Permissions

If you have a large number of spaces, it could be tedious and time-consuming, because there's no way to set the space permissions in bulk using the Confluence user interface. Instead, you can use the Confluence CLI add-on to set permissions in bulk:

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/org.swift.confluence.cli

See especially the "addPermissions" action described in the documentation:

https://bobswift.atlassian.net/wiki/display/CSOAP/Documentation

This blog post is a little old, but still gives a good introduction to the CLI:

http://ffeathers.wordpress.com/2011/10/20/confluence-cli-for-bulk-actions-like-deleting-or-publishing-pages/

When the spaces are protected, you can give the 3rd party access to the wiki. You'll need to allow "anonymous" access to the wiki at site level. The documentation is here:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Setting+Up+Public+Access

The above assumes that the wiki server itself is open to public access. It's worth checking with your sys admin team, in case it's behind a firewall.

I hope this helps!

Cheers

Sarah

Colm, as well as Sarah's excellent steps, I've raised an Improvement request with your comment as I think this could definitely be simpler. https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-28951
