Upgrade Confluence 5.6.1 from Win7/HSQLDB to 5.7.3 Srv2008/MSSQL

Fritz Hirschegger May 6, 2015

Hello Community !
I want to Upgrade/Install from Confluence 5.6.1 running under Win7 and the embedded HSQL to a Win 2008 Srv with MSSQL database. We have a 10 user license and about 400 pages with 28MB attachments. It is a small installation yet. So, should I

  • Upgrade my existing installation 5.6.1 to 5.7.3 on the Win7P
  • backup the old data as XML backup
  • Install 5.7.3 on the Srv and create a naked SQLDB
  • restore the data into the fresh installation

Do I need a developer license on the new Srv during the swap ? Or is there any other easier way ?

Thank you for your help !!
Fritz

Thank you Chander for your answers. Do you know if the jdbc bug is resolved with the new 5.8.4 Version ? We really really have to do the update in the near future smile

Hi Fritz,

I do recommend to switch first to a supported database because using HSQL DB in production is not advised. Since the instance is small, try to use the XML backup to import into the 2008 server and MSSQL DB using the exact same version as the production.

After the migration has been done, proceed with the upgrade. Be careful of this bug in 5.7 when using jdbc MSSQL Database. You need to switch to datasource to perform the upgrade and change back to jdbc afterwards.

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-36484

You can use the evaluation license to create the staging instance. After you finish the migration, you can set the 10 user license in the new server. Just change the server ID in my.atlassian.com to reflect the new ID of the new server.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

Rodrigo

Hi Rodrigo, meanwhile the actual Confluence Version is 5.8.4, and we found no time to do the upgrade, are your recommentations still up -to-date ? Is the jdbc bug gone with the new release ? Next week we will give it a try to perform the upgrade to the SQL driven Server Installation of Confluence. Hope to read you ...

Hi Fritz,

  1. Create a FULL XML backup of 5.6.1
  2. Install 5.6.1 on Srv
  3. Create an empty SQL Server Database
  4. Restore the XML Backup of 5.6.1
  5. Before Upgrading to 5.7.3
  6. switch to from jdbc to datasource

    • After you set the new installation files of 5.7.3 to point your current <Confluence HOME> directory run the steps in this guide to switch from jdbc to datasource.
      Backup all the modified files.
    • Start Confluence again.
    • After the upgrade, validate if Confluence is working.
    • Shutdown the app and change back to jdbc.
    • Start Confluence again.
  7. Hope this helps.
  8. Please use 10 user license on Prod Server.

Regards

Chander Inguva
