PDF Preview - can I turn it off?

DeanF April 29, 2015

We have just updated to 5.7.1. We have a large website with many technical docs and we do not want PDFs to appear in the new way. That is, we do not want users to try and comment on them. Is there a way to keep the old approach, so user just downloads or opens the PDF?

Thanks

An avoidance would be to insert links in such a way that they display in the old way, not as a preview? Is this possible?

Hey Dean,

May I ask if you are looking to disable the preview only for .pdf files? If not, you can disable the whole plugin:

You can disable the Confluence Previews plugin under your System add-ons section. To do so you just need to go under your Manage add-ons page, select All add-ons on the drop box and then type Confluence Previews into the search field. Then disable it and the preview feature will not longer work.

Let me know if you have any questions about it.

I hope it helps! smile

Hi,

we do not use searches, we just have a series of links to PDF docs, so I cannot answer your question. A typical page on our website is:

https://doc.hcc-embedded.com/display/HCCDocRoot/OS+Abstraction+Layer+-+OAL

I worked with our IT department and realized we tried this option before.  Unfortunately, by disabling the plug in, it has a side effect.  Once the plug in is disabled, when you search for a document and click on it in the quick search, it does not open the document anymore.  Instead it takes you to the page that the document is located on instead.  Since we have pages that contain a lot of links, this is not a practical solution for us because now the user has to scan the page to look for the document link.  Not practical and leads to additional frustration for the user.

If the user does not click on the document in the search box and accesses it via a page instead, then this fix works.  However, in our case, most users are searching for the document and accessing it via quick search. Have you experienced this at all?

Thank you!

Dina

Hi, we have continued using the system as normal since with no trouble. Good luck! (Sorry about the type first time)

Awesome, Dean! :) Since that was what you were looking for, could you please check my answer as accepted so if other users come to this topic they can clearly see what the correct answer was? Cheers!

Hi Dean! I was about to disable this plug in when I noticed the system warning that these add-ons are an integral part of the Confluence system and disabling them will have serious effects that could make Confluence inoperable. Did you experience any issues when you disabled this plug in? Thank you! Dina
