Suggestion/Question about breakdown in terse version comparisons

Pete Jaffe March 22, 2013

We heavily use macro "containers" like the Numbered Headings plugin within our pages, and I have noticed that it seems the page version comparison doesn't seem to present the same "terse" delta of changes within a "container" that it does with content outside of a container.

As a result, if I create a decently large page, when targeted changes are made to it, the version comparisons that I receive by email or else pull up in the Confluence web site end up succinctly calling out the change without me having to scroll through the entire body of the page.

However, as soon as I wrap the majority of that page in a NumberedHeadings macro (or an "Info" macro, which admittedly is not common, but seems to highlight that this isn't a behavior isolated to the NumberedHeadings macro), a version comparison report includes the entire contents of that container with the changes highlighted. As a result, I end up with effectively a complete copy of the page, and it is error prone and tedious to scroll through the whole page to find the differences.

If memory serves, an older version of Confluence might have had a "jump to next difference" set of anchor links, so re-introducing something like that could help, but I would also think that maybe it is reasonable to just show the snippet within the container that changed.

I tried to upload a file "DiffSamplePageSource.html" that is a "save" of the "Source View", and I would just change the word "fox" to "dog" and back in the 3 places that word appears. I'm not sure if this actually attached successfully, or if this is an effective way to sharing a page outside of Confluence. With the previous wiki markup, that process was much clearer to me...

Please let me know if I should have directly submitted this into the Issue tracking system for Confluence as a feature request, versus starting off in this Answers forum.

Thanks,

Pete

I believe that you are more than free to send this as a feature/bug/improvement to jira.atlassian.com

If you can easily reproduce this, would be great to the devs to have a step by step. And when done you can share it here with us :)

Cheers,

I went ahead and put this into the JIRA project for Confluence. For those interested in this improvement, please vote for it at https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-28720.
