Can I record time spent by work type?

Fred Smith April 16, 2015

In JIRA you can record the amount of time spent working on a ticket. I need to be able to break that down by task type. For instance, how much time is spent coding vs. testing vs. documentating the change (we have about a dozen work types in total).

My team is currently using Mantis and I wrote a Mantis plugin to allow the task type to be stored against each note added to the ticket (time is stored against each note). I want to migrate to JIRA but I cannot lose this level of detail (it feeds in to invoicing systems and is reconciled against project estimates).

I'm quite happy to pay for an add-on that includes this functionality, if one exists. I've tried searching but I couldn't find anything obvious.

Thanks

If you need to break you work on an issue level, it's better to create sub-tasks with appropriate types.

If you really want to have breakdown on an issue level and are ready to pay for this, then Tempo plugin is good candidate to look: http://www.tempoplugin.com/products/tempo-timesheets/

You can easily implement this with the Better Excel Plugin.

Just create a pivot table with the dimension issue type and you are done. One of the default export templates called worklog-report.xlsx already exports the raw data for this (exporting both issue type and the time spent), making it trivial. All you have to do is to change the dimensions of an existing pivot table in that spreadsheet, or create a new pivot table if you prefer so.

Thanks but this does not meet the requirement. I don't need the totals by issue type, I need it by work type (e.g. to fix issue #123, 45 minutes was spent coding, 20 minutes on peer review, 30 minutes on documentation and 50 minutes on testing). Overall I need this on a per-project basis to compare back to the original project estimates to help refine estimates on future projects.

Thanks. Looks like Tempo would give us some other benefits as well for the reporting I have to provide.

If there are any other similar plug-ins that others make use of I'd still appreciate hearing about them for comparison.
