MySQL 5.1 to 5.5 Migration

Justin Bassignani April 1, 2015

We're looking to migrate an existing Confluence 5.6 instance from CentOS6 to RHEL7. The current database is residing on MySQL 5.1, but RHEL7 only supports MySQL 5.5 or greater, which needs to be pulled from MySQL's repo. Should we be able to export/import the data across minor releases of MySQL without issue? If not, should we be able to upgrade a CentOS repo provided MySQL 5.1 instance with a standalone MySQL 5.5 RPM, as the EL6 repos only support up to MySQL 5.1? Thank you.

Hi Justin,

I was able to import the 5.1 data into a 5.5 once and it went smoothly. I do believe it's a smooth transition but I recommend to do this first into a staging instance and performing some extensive testing searching for issues before deploying on production.

Now going from 5.1 to 5.6 might be a huge step.

I hope this help.

Cheers,

Rodrigo

Thank you very much for the feedback. We will run this process through the lab, and confirm/deny a clean build.

Will do as soon as testing is complete, I don't want to mislead anyone in the interim in case I come across some caveats.

For additional reassurance - I've done this several times, and had the same experience as Rodrigo - it sails through. Minimal step changes in my case - *just* the database upgrade, moving hardware and/or OS done as a different step, but upgrading MySQL 5.1 to 5.5 is very stable. And I'd echo "test it" and "5.6 is a different story" too.

When upgrading MySQL5.1 to MySQL5.5 on RHEL6/Centos6 it is best to use the official Software Collections (SCL) Repository rather than a standalone RPM.
