Sourcing configuration from the environment in a custom plugin

I would like to source the configuration of a custom plugin from the environment the agent is running.  What is the best approach to do this?  Does a remote agent have access to either environment variables or Java properties?  Does a task run in the same JVM as the agent?

I'd prefer not to have to have the end user have to configure the plugin in Bamboo and would like to it to behave differently depending on where it is deployed.

Remote agent has access to the environments it runs in, just like any Java process. Tasks run in the same JVM as agent that starts them.
