Encouraging people to book time

cwsitservices March 8, 2015

Hi All,

Have done some looking around and haven't been able to find the answer to our question, so thought i would post to see if anyone is able to help or point me in the right direction.

Basically, we need to encourage/ remind people to log time spent against an item when moving/ dragging items between different swimlanes on the agile board. Another thing we are thinking about having is a way of making the person add a comment when 'dragging' items from one swimelane to another.

Is anyone aware of a way of having some form of dialog box or a time tracking/ comment box pop up and remind people to book time/ add a comment?

Any ideas on how this can be done would be appreciated.

Chris

In order to add the Validator to the workflow, I had to install the JIRA Suite Utilities plugin. Once installed, all works as expected and is incorporated to the workflow as required.

Thanks Gebsun, i do have a similar item:

Which appears for me in Chrome, but not other browsers? I believe this may be a Tempo related item and works well, logging time on a timer against a particular item.

Icon looks like tempo. Our solution extends JIRA and is available despite of the browser. Gebsun.

Yeah is Tempo. Ah right, might have to have a look. Have noticed that the Tempo option seems to only be available for Chrome.

Mandatory comment and time tracking fields on the transition screens will force your team to not leave these fields empty.

You can also try Automated Log Work plugin to track time more precisely and flawlessly.
It offers manual mode so users can start/stop their timer (and log its value) with a dedicated button click.
It also offers auto mode that allows to track time totally transparently when users move issues between statuses and Agile columns (supports all workflows with default 'In Progress' status).

You can follow the below procedure:

  • Add Time Tracking field to the Transition screen
  • Update workflow transitions to add a Validator for the Time Spent field - this will ensure that the work is logged while transitioning an issue from one status to the other on a Scrum board
  • Similarly, add a Comment field through the Validator to make it mandatory while transitioning the issues
  • Use this workflow on the Scrum Board

I hope this helps.

Rahul Savaikar
