Atlassian plugin / add-on generations: version 2 vs. atlassian connect

LukasG January 6, 2015

Will version2 add-ons be replaced by atlassian connect or live side-by-side?

Will connect plugins ever run on self-hosted JIRA server?

What could be a potential version3 for Atlassian plugins?

From what I've read and heard:

  • Version 2 plugins will not be replaced by Connect, they will live side-by-side.
  • The intention is for Connect plugins to run on JIRA Server as well as Cloud eventually. (but I've heard such a range of timetables on this, I don't want to even start to guess at when)
  • Really good question!  I've no idea, but I'd like to know what Version 3 holds too!

Thanks for your answer. Can you point me to any source where there is some official statement about any plans to make connect plugins work on JIRA server?

https://developer.atlassian.com/static/connect/docs/resources/faqs.html - it's a bit short, and gives as much date information as I have :-(

In this context, what about Speakeasy Plugins? https://developer.atlassian.com/docs/advanced-topics/speakeasy

Should they be considered when starting a new plugin project? It seems they are still not recommended for public JIRA instances, nor do I see a vibrant community around them.

I think speakeasy is probably dying.

Anyone knows why? It seemed like a pretty cool idea, although we just played with it a little, no real production experience. I still think it could solve many tiny front-end problems in Atlassian products...
