PHPUnit exits with 255 on hosted Bamboo

I've been having trouble getting the tests to run for our project.  I have also tested a very simple example with one test and a simple assertions.  No matter what phpunit always exits with 255 instead of 1 and the job fails.  Any thoughts as to what is configured wrong?

We recently moved from hosted to on-demand JIRA and are interested in also migrating our Jenkins to Bamboo on demand.

I made an ec2 isntance that had everything on it needed to run our tests and created an image, bamboo then uses that image to create an instance.  I also set it to create a single instance that is never taken down so that I can ssh in to debug if necessary.
