The current scheduling result does not contain any epics

Judith Wren November 26, 2014

When using JIRA Portfolio and selecting the Gantt chart view after recalculating, it returns error message "The current scheduling result does not contain any epics."   I do however have about 200 epics and am not filtering on releases, teams, estimates, stages, or themes.  What do I need to do?

Hi Judith, if there are epics in the backlog, but they don't show up in the schedule, it means the scheduling algorithm could not determine a possible timeline for these epics. Reasons could be:

  • The epics don't have an estimate (an epic can have an estimate by itself while it has no child stories, otherwise it is the total estimate of the child stories)
  • There are no resources available who can be assigned with the epics (e.g. no teams/team members are defined or insufficient team velocity to fit anything in)

Typically, if the epics cannot be scheduled, they are highlighted in red in the backlog table after pressing "Recalculate", and when hovering over the items title (the first column), there is a tooltip giving more details on why it could not be scheduled.
